Course Outline:

This RAMTUC designed course assembles an experienced team of experts from within the radioactive material transport industry who address all aspects of system design and management in the field of radioactive material transport.

Purpose:

To provide an understanding of the more extreme duties encountered in the RAM transport environment. Further, to provide guidance on how to develop, manage and sustain operational systems associated with radioactive material consignment and transport.

Study time:

One standard option: Three days duration.

Basic study text:

IAEA Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material 2012 edition, SSR-6; The Nuclear Industries Security Regulations 2003.

Course personnel:

Radioactive material industry staff with specialist knowledge of the study topics.

Attainment level:

Proven ability to meet the extremes of the function specific training requirements. Ability to undertake decision making roles in radioactive material consignment and transport as required by the United Nations Model Regulations, the various modal controls and the IAEA Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material.

Test method:

A two part written examination covering all aspects of the above programme at the close of the training course.
Paper one – General; Paper two – A values.

Advanced Consignment Skills.

Course entry requirement:

Level 2 pass or equivalent level of knowledge and experience.

  • Physics: the fission process; criticality; criticality control; radionuclide decay; half-life concepts; implications for transport operations
    Working with TS-R-1: role of the book; structure of the text; navigating the system
  • Supporting systems: associated IAEA texts ~ TS-G-1.1, TS-G-1.2, SS112/3/5
  • The Regulator: legislation; compliance; enforcement; emergencies; approvals
  • Material design/approval: criteria & procedures for special form, LDM, LSA
  • Emergency response: structure of emergency plans; accident response process
    Quality assurance: legal requirements, programme development, structure, control
  • Insurance and liability: world conventions; UK systems; responsible party; COFS
  • Transport security: dangerous goods; high consequence DG; nuclear materials
  • Packaging design/approval: design processes; safety cases; testing procedures
  • Packaging selection process based on A values: A1/A2 value calculations in advanced situations, LSA-III, LDM
  • Derivation of A values
  • Transport of RAM waste: waste categories; waste producers; disposal processes
  • Compliance support: key people; pink book; management systems; checklists.
